Unanimous Decision of New Jersey Supreme Court Results in Precedent-Setting Victory for Farm Animals
TRENTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a unanimous landmark decision, the New Jersey Supreme Court today struck down the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s (NJDA) regulations exempting all routine husbandry practices as “humane” and ordered the agency to readdress many of the state-mandated standards for the treatment of farm animals. A broad coalition of humane organizations, farmers, veterinarians, and environmental and consumer groups, led by Farm Sanctuary and represented by the public interest law firms Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal, Washington, D.C., and Egert & Trakinski, Hackensack, N.J., brought the case to the state’s Supreme Court. In this monumental case, the Court ruled that factory farming practices cannot be considered humane simply because they are widely used, setting a legal precedent for further actions to end the most egregious abuses on factory farms throughout the U.S. The Court also rejected the practice of tail-docking cattle, and the manner in which the NJDA had provided for farm animals to be mutilated without anesthesia.

Olympics: 2 dead birds found at Hong Kong equestrian site
HONG KONG — Two dead birds were discovered at an Olympic equestrian venue in Hong Kong, and authorities were testing whether they were infected with the bird flu virus. The birds were found last week, equestrian competition official Mark Pinkstone said Monday. The H5N1 bird flu doesn't pose a threat to horses, but can be lethal to humans. Hong Kong has struggled with the bird flu for years and six people died during the biggest outbreak in 1997. The Olympic equestrian events, to be held between Aug. 9 and 21, were moved from Beijing to the former British colony because of a rash of equine diseases and substandard quarantine procedures on the mainland.

   Conjoined birds found in Arkansas
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - An likely set of conjoined twin birds -- an incredibly rare find -- has been discovered in Arkansas, authorities said.
The pair of barn swallows, attached at the hip by skin and possibly muscle tissue, is being sent to the Smithsonian Institution for examination and confirmation, Arkansas wildlife officials said Friday.
"I can't even say it's one in a million -- it's probably more than that," said Karen Rowe, an ornithologist with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission. "There's just very little to no records of such a thing."
The birds, found by a landowner in White County, fell out of a nest as a healthy sibling flew off to learn how to hunt with its parents, Rowe said. The birds first appeared to have only three legs, but further examination found a fourth leg tucked up underneath the skin connecting the pair.

Wildlife officers kill bear with jar stuck on head
ST. PAUL, Minnesota - Minnesota wildlife officials tried for six days to capture a bear that had a plastic jar stuck over its head, but ended up killing the animal after it wandered into a city during a festival.
The wild black bear -- whose head got stuck inside a 2.5 gallon clear plastic jug presumably while foraging for food -- ambled into the city of Frazee, about 200 miles northwest of St. Paul, during the town's busy Turkey Days celebration, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
